( Q ) Who teaches the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST)?

( A ) The Oxford Police Department is the host agency that teaches Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST), ARIDE, and the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) programs to the entire state of Mississippi thanks to a federal grant from NHTSA.

( Q ) How much does a class cost to attend?

( A ) The class is free. Yes, the materials are free as well.

( Q ) How much do the materials cost?

( A ) They are free. The class is free.

( Q ) What are the pre-requisites for each class?

( A ) For SFST, you need to be a certified law enforcement officer
For ARIDE, you need to be certified in SFST
For DRE, you need to have completed SFST and ARIDE and be recommended by your department.
For SFST Instructor, you need to be experienced and competent at SFST’s and you need to be recommended by your department.

( Q ) What is SFST?

( A ) Standardized Field Sobriety Testing is a 24-hour curriculum that trains the officer on the administration and observation of the 3 validated field sobriety tests to determine if someone is under the influence of something. The officer will be trained on the tests as well as the State laws to enhance their ability to make DUI arrests and testify to these observations in court.

( Q ) What is ARIDE?

( A ) Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement uses the foundation of the SFST’s and gives the officer more tests to conduct as well as more observations to make, to help determine if a person is under the influence of something other than alcohol. This is the basic course on drug impaired driving.

( Q ) What is DRE?

( A ) DRE stands for Drug Recognition Expert. It is a term that is derived from the DECP (Drug Evaluation and Classification Program) curriculum. A DRE is an officer that has the training and experience to testify in court as an expert witness as to what type of drug a person was under the influence of at the time of arrest. This training includes 72 hours in the class room, field certifications and a final knowledge exam.

( Q ) How do I sign up or register?

( A )  -  To register for SFST or ARIDE, you just complete the online registration form. This can be found on our website at www.mstide.us

If you are interested in SFST Instructor School or DRE School, you will need to have met the qualifications for each and recommended by your department via email at info@mstide.us.

( Q ) How do I submit 30 names for SFST class?

( A ) You can scan them in and email them to info@mstide.us or you can mail them to 715 Molly Barr Road, Oxford, MS 38655. We are working on a digital way to upload them but for now the ideal way is to scan and email.

( Q ) How long will it take to get certificate?

( A ) For SFST, If you haven’t heard anything within 2 weeks of sending in your 30 names, please contact us.

For ARIDE, you should receive them within 2 weeks of completing the class unless your SFST certificate was still pending.
